Platform B: Amplifying Strong and Credible SEE Voices

Event series by Balkan Investigative Reporting Network and partners

Together with our partners, BIRN is launching a series of online and offline events aimed to amplify the voices of strong and credible individuals and organisations in the region that promote the core values of democracy, such as civic engagement, independent institutions, transparency and rule of law.

As a primarily media organisation, we want to open space and provide a platform to discuss and reshape our alliances in light of the challenges facing democracies in South-East and Central Europe.

This effort comes at a critical time when the region is seeing several troubling trends: centralized power, reduced transparency, assaults on media, politicized judiciaries, unchecked corruption, online violations and social polarization – all amidst heightened geopolitical tensions and deep divisions in Europe.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, Platform B event series will be organised in accordance with all relevant health measures. As the situation improves, we hope to be able to host some of the events in BIRN spaces in Sarajevo and Belgrade, and elsewhere in the region.

The Platform B will be an opportunity for individuals and groups to meet monthly on selected topics.

Opening event: Digital Rights Falter Amid Political and Social Unrest: What Now?

Date: 1 July, 2021 (Thursday)

At this event, BIRN and SHARE Foundation will discuss its annual digital rights report, together with other members of the newly established SEE Network, talking about the key trends concerning the digital ecosystem.

We monitored digital rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, North Macedonia, Romania and Serbia and collected more than 1500 cases of online violations.

In Southern and Eastern Europe, where online disinformation campaigns are endangering guaranteed individual freedoms, and while the decline in internet safety has become a worrying trend, citizens with poor media and digital illiteracy have been left without viable protection mechanisms.

The event participants will have an opportunity to discuss and hear reflections from representatives of: EDRi, Zasto ne?, Citizen D, Homo Digitalis, SCiDEV, Partners Serbia, Metamorphosis, Atina NGO, Media Development Center.

Second event: Freedom of Information in the Balkans: Classified, Rejected, Delayed

Date: July 15, 2021 (Thursday)

Time: 14.00, CET

The global pandemic has been used as an excuse for many Balkan states to not fully implement freedom of information laws, leaving the public in the dark.

Transparency has been another victim of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While on paper, freedom of information laws are up-to-date in almost all countries in the region, implementation is patchy at best and has grown worse since governments clamped down on the flow of information with the onset of the coronavirus.

Together with journalists, public information officers and colleagues from Open Government Partnership we will reflect on the findings of BIRN’s tracking institutional transparency report and offer recommendations on how to make our institutions open and accountable.

BIRN Kosovo Holds Second Training With High School Students in Gjilan

On June 18, BIRN Kosovo held a second training session with students of the Zenel Hajdini high school in the municipality of Gjilan.

The training was held as part of the “Solidifying the Resilience of Kosovo’s Current and Future Journalists” project, and was aimed at students of Kosovo’s state-run high schools that are interested in undergoing training in media production, media literacy and tackling fake news.

The program aims to nurture young talent by mentoring students in the production of videos, photos and articles in order to achieve the main goal of the activity: to create a path for increased independence, transparency, accountability and civic engagement.

A total of 16 students from the social sciences department of the Zenel Hajdini high school participated, 11 of whom were women.

At the end of the training session, youngsters pitched their journalistic ideas, which the BIRN team will collect and thoroughly analyse before selecting the articles and other materials that will be published on the online platform KallxoRinia (Kallxo Youth). The production of all of these articles will be overseen by a team of BIRN Kosovo editors.

In the upcoming months, BIRN will hold another eight sessions at the Social Studies department of high schools from across Kosovo.

 

The “Europeanization of Kosovo’s Environmental Agenda” Team Invites you to join “Green Energy Days 2021”

“Green Energy Days 2021” is an initiative organized within the framework of the project “Europeanization of Kosovo’s Environmental Agenda”, funded by the European Union Office in Kosovo, BIRN Kosovo, CEE Bankwatch, ERA Group and TV Mreza, running from June 28 to July 7, 2021.

The “Europeanization of Kosovo’s Environmental Agenda” project supports the proactive participation of Civil Society in Kosovo, the media and environmental activists in policy reform and decision making relating to energy, the environment, and public health. Our goal is to help Kosovo to bring environmental policies closer to the EU acquis and strengthen the dialogue between our CSO’s, media, activists, and the public sector.

Our Team will utilize their expertise in implementing impactful initiatives on energy efficiency, renewable sources and environment, knowledge and compliance for the environment, to organize the “Green Energy Days 2021”, to positively influence awareness raising among citizens, decision makers, and energy and environmental policy makers.

The 10-day event includes a series of activities that will bring together local, regional and international stakeholders to talk about the environment, energy efficiency, Kosovo’s progress in approximating its legislation to the EU acquis and other pressing and related issues facing the Western Balkans.

The Green Energy Days will also bring together youth from high school and universities in two dialogue meetings with key stakeholders to raise awareness of pressing environmental issues in their communities, learn about relevant advocacy and journalistic tools and mechanisms to address their environmental concerns in a meaningful way, and the current best energy efficiency and environmental practices.

Through a local conference on June 28, local stakeholders, CSOs and activists will talk about the energy efficiency, renewable energy sources and alternatives, targets that Kosovo should meet and recommendations to take into account towards energy efficiency.

Over 30 CSOs, environmental activists and media representatives from Western Balkan countries will be brought together in an online regional conference to discuss best practices, share experiences and identify areas of cooperation on energy issues. Practices, challenges and problems faced in each of the region’s countries will be discussed in order to find common solutions and ways of addressing them, which will be detailed in recommendation papers created by participants.

On July 5, the Green Energy Days 2021 will discuss the European Green Deal targets that Kosovo aspires to, bringing local, regional and international representatives from CSOs and institutions, environmental journalists and media representatives together via a high-level, international conference. They will discuss how to achieve energy efficiency, sustainable development, and sustainable public health, as well as global best practices and challenges related to energy and the environment.

In Peja, partners will mobilize youngsters in a street action, namely a bike tour through the city, to raise awareness about environmental pollution, air pollution and the degradation that cars cause to the environment as a whole.

An awards ceremony will end the event, awarding the best journalistic stories on the topics of energy efficiency, environmental protection, climate change and the effects of the environment on human health. This is the second and last competition of the action, which marks the end of the Green Energy Days for 2021.

Throughout the Green Energy Days 2021 event we will broadcast important public service announcements, youth promotion and awareness raising campaigns from BIRN’s youth platform, and partners televised debates and Interviews with significant stakeholders in the field of energy efficiency and clean environment in Kosovo, through the KOSID, BIRN Kosovo and TV Mreza channels and all partners’ social media pages.

Desetodnevni događaj uključuje niz aktivnosti koje će okupiti lokalne, regionalne i međunarodne zainteresovane strane kako bi razgovarali o životnoj sredini, energetskoj efikasnosti, napretku Kosova u približavanju svojih propisa sa pravnim tekovinama EU i drugim hitnim i povezanim pitanjima sa kojima se suočava Zapadni Balkan.

Dani zelene energije takođe će okupiti mlade iz srednjih škola i sa univerziteta na dva sastanka za dijalog sa ključnim zainteresovanim stranama kako bi podigli svest o gorućim ekološkim pitanjima u svojim zajednicama, naučili o relevantnim zagovaračkim i novinarskim alatima i mehanizmima za smisleno rešavanje njihovih ekoloških problema  i aktuelnim najboljim praksama energetske efikasnosti i zaštite životne sredine.

Kroz lokalnu konferenciju 28. juna, lokalni akteri, organizacije građanskog društva i aktivisti govoriće o energetskoj efikasnosti, obnovljivim izvorima energije i alternativama, ciljevima koje bi Kosovo trebalo da ispuni i preporukama koje treba da se uzmu u obzir u pogledu energetske efikasnosti.

Preko 30  organizacija građanskog društva, aktivista za zaštitu životne sredine i predstavnika medija iz zemalja Zapadnog Balkana biće okupljeno na onlajn regionalnoj konferenciji  kako bi razgovarali o najboljim praksama, razmenili iskustva i identifikovali oblasti saradnje u energetskim pitanjima. Razgovaraće se o praksama, izazovima i problemima sa kojima se suočava svaka zemlja u regionu kako bi se pronašla zajednička rešenja i načini  za njihovo rešavanje što će detaljno biti objašnjeno u preporukama učesnika.

Dana 5. jula, na Danima zelene energije 2021, razgovaraće se o ciljevima koji proističu iz Evropskog zelenog sporazuma kome Kosovo teži, okupljajući lokalne, regionalne i međunarodne predstavnike organizacija građanskog društva, ekološke novinare i predstavnike medija putem međunarodne konferencije na visokom nivou. Oni će razgovarati o tome kako postići energetsku efikasnost, održivi razvoj i održivo javno zdravlje, kao i o najboljim svetskim praksama i izazovima vezanim za energiju i životnu sredinu.

Partneri u Peći mobilisaće mlade u uličnoj akciji, odnosno biciklističkoj turi kroz grad, kako bi podigli svest o zagađenju životne sredine, zagađenju vazduha i degradaciji koju automobili nanose životnoj sredini u celini.

Događaj će se završiti svečanom dodelom nagrada najboljim novinarskim pričama nagrađenim na teme energetske efikasnosti, zaštite životne sredine, klimatskih promena i efekata životne sredine na zdravlje ljudi. Ovo je drugo i poslednje takmičenje u sklopu ove akcije, kojim se obeležava završetak Dana zelene energije za 2021. godinu.

Tokom manifestacije Dani zelene energije 2021, emitovaćemo važna obaveštenja u službi javnosti, kampanje za promovisanje mladih i kampanje za  podizanje svesti sa BIRN-ove platforme za mlade i  televizijske debate i intervjue naših partnera sa značajnim akterima u oblasti energetske efikasnosti i čiste životne sredine na Kosovu preko kanala KOSID-a, BIRN Kosovo i TV Mreže i na svim stranicama na društvenim mrežama naših partnera.

Nga data 28 qershor deri më 7 korrik do të organizohen “Ditët e energjisë së gjelbër 2021”, një iniciativë që është pjesë e projektit “Evropianizimi i agjendës mjedisore të Kosovës”, i financuar nga Zyra e Bashkimit Evropian në Kosovë, BIRN Kosova, CEE Bankwatch, ERA Group dhe TV Mreza.

Projekti “Europianizimi i agjendës mjedisore të Kosovës” mbështet pjesëmarrjen proaktive të shoqërisë civile në Kosovë, mediave dhe aktivistëve mjedisorë në reformën e politikave dhe vendimmarrjen në lidhje me energjinë, mjedisin dhe shëndetin publik.

Qëllimi i projektit është të ndihmojë Kosovën për t’i sjellë politikat mjedisore më afër legjislacionit të BE-së dhe për të forcuar dialogun midis organizatave të shoqërisë civile, mediave, aktivistëve dhe sektorit publik.

BIRN Kosova, CEE Bankwatch, ERA Group dhe TV Mreza do të përdorin ekspertizën e tyre në zbatimin e iniciativave me ndikim në efiçencën e energjisë, burimet e ripërtërishme dhe mjedisin, njohuritë dhe pajtueshmërinë me mjedisin, për të ndikuar pozitivisht në rritjen e ndërgjegjësimit në mesin e qytetarëve, vendimmarrësve dhe krijuesve të politikave të energjisë dhe atyre mjedisore.

Ngjarja 10-ditore përfshin një sërë aktivitetesh që do të bashkojnë akterët lokalë, rajonalë dhe ndërkombëtarë për të folur rreth mjedisit, efiçencës së energjisë, progresit të Kosovës në përafrimin e legjislacionit të saj me legjislacionin e BE-së dhe çështje të tjera të ngutshme dhe të ndërlidhura me të cilat përballet Ballkani Perëndimor.

“Ditët e energjisë së gjelbër” gjithashtu do të bashkojnë të rinjtë nga shkollat e mesme dhe universitetet në dy takime dialogu me palët kryesore të interesit për të rritur ndërgjegjësimin lidhur me çështjet mjedisore të ngutshme në komunitetet e tyre, për të mësuar rreth avokimit përkatës dhe mjeteve dhe mekanizmave gazetareskë për të adresuar shqetësimet e tyre mjedisore në një mënyrë kuptimplote dhe praktikat më të mira aktuale të efiçencës së energjisë dhe mjedisit.

Përmes një konference lokale më 28 qershor akterët lokalë të interesit, organizatat e shoqërisë civile dhe aktivistët do të flasin për efiçencën e energjisë, burimet e ripërtërishme të energjisë dhe alternativat, synimet që Kosova duhet t’i përmbushë dhe rekomandimet për të marrë parasysh drejt efiçiencës së energjisë.

Mbi 30 organizata të shoqërisë civile, aktivistë mjedisorë dhe përfaqësues të mediave nga vendet e Ballkanit Perëndimor do të bashkohen në një konferencë rajonale online për të diskutuar praktikat më të mira, për të ndarë përvojat dhe për të identifikuar fushat e bashkëpunimit për çështjet e energjisë. Do të diskutohen praktikat, sfidat dhe problemet me të cilat përballen secili prej vendeve të rajonit  për të gjetur zgjidhje të përbashkëta dhe mënyra për t’i adresuar ato, të cilat do të detajohen në dokumentet e rekomandimeve të krijuara nga pjesëmarrësit.

Më 5 korrik, në “Ditët e energjisë së gjelbër 2021” do të diskutohen synimet e Marrëveshjes së Gjelbër Evropiane për të cilat aspiron Kosova, duke sjellë së bashku përfaqësuesit lokalë, rajonalë dhe ndërkombëtarë nga organizatat e shoqërisë civile dhe institucionet, gazetarët mjedisorë dhe përfaqësuesit e mediave përmes një konference ndërkombëtare të nivelit të lartë. Ata do të diskutojnë se si të arrihet efiçienca e energjisë, zhvillimi i qëndrueshëm dhe shëndeti i qëndrueshëm publik, si dhe praktikat më të mira dhe sfidat globale që lidhen me energjinë dhe mjedisin.

Në Pejë, partnerët do të mobilizojnë të rinjtë në një aksion rrugor, përkatësisht një turne me biçikleta nëpër qytet, për të rritur ndërgjegjësimin në lidhje me ndotjen e mjedisit, ndotjen e ajrit dhe degradimin që automjetet i shkaktojnë mjedisit në tërësi.

Një ceremoni çmimesh do të përfundojë ngjarjen, duke shpërblyer storjet më të mira gazetareske mbi temat e efiçiencës së energjisë, mbrojtjen e mjedisit, ndryshimin e klimës dhe efektet e mjedisit në shëndetin e njeriut.

Kjo është gara e dytë dhe e fundit e aksionit, e cila shënon fundin e “Ditëve të energjisë së gjelbër” për vitin 2021.

Gjatë ngjarjes “Ditët e energjisë së gjelbër 2021” do të transmetohen njoftime të rëndësishme të shërbimit publik, do të bëhet promovimi i të rinjve dhe fushatat e ndërgjegjësimit nga platforma rinore e BIRN-it dhe partnerët, do të ketë debate dhe intervista televizive me akterë të rëndësishëm në fushën e efiçiencës së energjisë dhe mjedisit të pastër në Kosovë, përmes KOSID, kanalet e BIRN Kosova dhe TV Mreza dhe faqet e mediave sociale të të gjithë partnerëve.

BIRN Kosovo Starts New Training Program for High School Students

On June 15, BIRN Kosovo held a training session with students from the Shaban Hashani high school in Ferizaj, as part of the Solidifying the Resilience of Kosovo’s Current and Future Journalists project

The session was the first held in BIRN Kosovo’s new training program for students at Kosovo’s state-run high schools who are interested in gaining experience in media production, media literacy and tackling fake news.

The program aims to nurture young talent by mentoring students in the production of videos, photos and articles. By engaging Kosovo’s citizens at this young age, it is hoped that the next generation of journalists will go on to increase the independence of the media and the transparency and accountability of public institutions, as well as enhance civic engagement.

In the first session which took place in the municipality of Ferizaj, a total of 19 students participated, 15 of whom were women.

At the end of the training session, the youngsters pitched their journalistic ideas. These pitches will be collected and thoroughly analysed by the BIRN team, who will then select the best stories for publication on the online platform KallxoRinia (Kallxo Youth), the production of which will be overseen by a team of BIRN Kosovo editors.

In the upcoming months, BIRN will hold another nine training sessions at social studies departments in public high schools across Kosovo.

 

BIRN Investigation of Fugitive Montenegrin Ex-President’s Son Wins Award

BIRN’s investigation into the controversial business of Milos Marovic, son of Montenegrin fugitive ex-president Svetozar Marovic, was among the winning reports in this year’s EU Awards for Investigative Journalism, given for stories published in 2020 in Montenegro.

BIRN’s investigation, ‘Son of Fugitive Ex-President Builds Raspberry Fortune in Serbia’, revealing how Serbia serves as a ‘safe haven’ for the family of the fugitive Montenegrin former politician Svetozar Marovic, was awarded third place in the EU Awards for Investigative Journalism at a ceremony on June 15 in Montenegro’s capital Podgorica.

The investigative report, produced by BIRN’s Sasa Dragojlo from Serbia, Marko Vesovic of Dan in Montenegro and Vladimir Otasevic from Montenegrin investigative media Lupa, was published in December 2020 and republished by a number of local and international media outlets. It showed that since fleeing a prison sentence in Montenegro in 2016, Marovic’s son Milos has built up agricultural land holdings in Serbia worth more than a million euros.

After the investigation was published, the Montenegrin authorities renewed their call for Svetozar Marozic’s extradition.

Serbia, on the other hand, remained silent, and also rejected a BIRN freedom of information request on the progress of Montenegro’s attempt to extradite Svetozar Marovic, saying its laws oblige it to “maintain confidentiality” about the case.

Commenting on the award, Dragojlo said that investigative journalism should be used to confront “the mighty and privileged and their damaging or corrupt actions”.

“That often looks like a Sisyphean task, but awards like this are a sign that not everything is in vain, and that shining a light on the dubious deeds of the elites are beneficial for the whole of society,” he said.

“I want to thank the colleagues I worked with for their commitment and encourage other journalists to cooperate more as transnational teams, since for a long time there have been no borders nor boundaries for the crooked,” he added.

First prize went to journalists Biljana Matijasevic and Alisa Hajdarpasic for their story ‘Portonovi is Owned by the Daughter of the President of Azerbaijan’, published by Centre for Investigative Journalism in Montenegro.

Second prize was awarded to Svetlana Djokic of TV Vijesti for the series ‘Way of Revenge’, while Dejan Milovac from MANS received a special award for research for the investigation ‘Dossier Carevic: All the President’s People’.

The EU Awards for Investigative Journalism in Montenegro is part of an ongoing EU-funded project entitled Strengthening Quality News and Independent Journalism in the Western Balkans and Turkey, implemented by BIRN Hub in partnership with Thomson Media gGmbH (TM), the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the European Broadcast Union (EBU), Central European University (CEU CDMS), the Media Association of South-East Europe (MASE), the Center for Investigative Journalism of Montenegro (CIN CG), the Independent Trade Union of Journalists and Media Workers (SSNM), BIRN Albania and BIRN Serbia.

The aim of the project is to empower and support independent journalism and investigative journalists.

 

Deadline Extended for Applications for Traineeship Programme for Young Journalists from North Macedonia

The deadline for submission of applications for the four-month traineeship programme for students, recent graduates and young journalists from North Macedonia has been extended until June 21st, 2021, at midnight Central European Time.

If you are looking to kick off your career in journalism, but are struggling to find the right place to gain practical knowledge, our traineeship programme is what you need. The second round of the traineeship programme was launched after successfully completing a first cycle from November 2020 until February 2021, where 12 aspiring, young journalists spent four months working in professional newsrooms in the region, producing over 300 different news pieces. Some examples of their work may be seen here, here, here and here.

The programme, implemented within the Media for All project saw a great success as a number of participants were offered roles or temporary positions at different media after completing their traineeship.

Interns will have the chance to become full-time members of the newsroom for four months, attending editorial meetings, learning how to pitch ideas and chose relevant angle for a story, learning how to cover daily events and perform different kinds of interviews, working in the field, doing a live broadcast, writing analyses, feature stories, fact-checks and much more. Trainees will receive financial support to cover minimum living costs during those four months.

Due to the travel restrictions and health concerns caused by COVID-19, applicants will be placed in the outlet in their country of residence. Applicants may express their preferences as to which media outlet they would like to spend their traineeship with, but the organisers maintain the right to make the final decision about placement.

Who can apply?

Senior year journalism students, recent graduates or young journalists from North Macedonia may apply.

Applicants must be between 18 and 26 years old.

Candidates from all parts of the country in question are encouraged to apply, as the project can provide funds for travel within one country, as well as accommodation costs.

Financial support:

All selected participants will receive financial support during their placement to cover minimum living costs.

In case candidates need to travel or relocate within the country during the course of the programme, travel and accommodation costs will also be covered by the organisers.

This evidence includes, but are not limited to, confirmation of enrolment for the ongoing academic year OR diploma/degree certificate/confirmation of graduation issued in the last two years OR evidence of your current employment.

BIRN Summer School Offers Investigative Reporting Training on Croatia Coast

BIRN’s flagship Summer School of Investigative Reporting returns for the 11th time in August, offering journalists a unique opportunity to learn investigative skills from award-winning trainers and journalists.

The Summer School of Investigative Reporting, which will be held this year in Croatia’s picturesque coastal village of Mlini from August 23-30, will again put together top journalists and editors for a week-long training programme.

Due to the global pandemic, BIRN has changed its usual programme in order to ensure that health and safety measures are respected. This year’s hybrid programme will include both online and offline sessions.

This year, BIRN is teaming up with journalists and trainers from Lighthouse Reports, an award-winning non-profit organisation based in the Netherlands which leads complex transnational investigations blending traditional journalistic methods with emerging techniques like open source intelligence and specialisms like data science.

For the first time this summer, applicants will have the chance to choose one of four course themes: Arms, Surveillance, Agriculture and Waste. Part of the training programme will be focused on the three themes that attract most interest from the participants.

In the mornings, participants will have joint sessions in hands-on investigative journalism skills, such as open source techniques, financial forensics and data journalism.

In the afternoon sessions, participants will be divided into three groups, depending on the theme they are following. Each group will have its lead trainers and will work with them on specific investigations, covering their group’s topic, applying the skills and techniques acquired during the morning sessions. Specific ideas and story angles, as well as the materials needed, will be prepared prior to the Summer School and participants will receive them during a briefing on the first day.

Work on the investigations is expected to be finalised during the Summer School, with only minor final work to be left for afterwards. Journalists from other media outlets are encouraged to co-publish the investigations originate at the Summer School.

The agenda and a detailed list of trainers will be published in the coming weeks.

We are providing 30 full scholarships for selected participants. This will cover accommodation, meals, as well as transportation expenses of up to 150 euros. Apart from the training, editorial support and mentorship, BIRN will, through our Investigative Initiative Fund, provide participants with fees.

Eligible participants include journalists who have experience in investigative reporting and who have covered the course theme they have chosen. Journalists from the following countries are eligible to apply: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia and Turkey.

Journalists who had previously participated in our Summer Schools are again eligible to apply.

Since the first Summer School in 2010, BIRN has trained more than 300 journalists from the Balkans and beyond, providing them with financial, editorial, mentorship and publication support. The participants, who are usually a mixture of experienced investigative journalists and those who have only a few years of experience in the field, are also provided with excellent opportunities for networking.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, there is a possibility that some trainers will not be able to come to Croatia, so they will join us online via Zoom. BIRN also aims to undertake all the necessary preventive and protection measures and will inform the participants of COVID-19 related rules and procedures. In case the offline setting is not possible, school will most likely take place online.

BIRN Launches Database of Mass Graves from Yugoslav Wars

‘Bitter Land’ is an interactive database of mass graves that aims to demonstrate the scale of the atrocities, ethnic cleansing and operations to cover up war crimes during the 1990s conflicts in the former Yugoslavia.

The Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN on June 3 launched the first comprehensive, interactive database of mass graves from the 1990s wars in the former Yugoslavia, giving an unprecedented insight into the largest operations to cover up war crimes in Europe since World War II.

The Bitter Land database provides information in three languages (English, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and Albanian) on the location of mass graves from the wars in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Kosovo, including the number of victims identified after exhumations, archive reports and images, plus details of related court cases, witness testimonies and other resources.

It is being launched ahead of the final verdict on June 8 in the trial of former Bosnian Serb military leader Ratko Mladic, who stands accused of bearing responsibility for some of the crimes that led to mass graves being dug during the Bosnian conflict.

BIRN’s aim is to present factual data in order to help counter the continuing selective denial of crimes and historical revisionism about the 1990s wars.

“One of the main focuses was to create a source of fact-based information and data on one of the biggest systematic cover-ups of war crimes in recent history,” said Nejra Mulaomerovic, who created the project with BIRN’s regional director, Marija Ristic.

“The database also represents an effort to foster the memorialisation process by providing a significant number of resources and using new technologies to capture current state of these sites,” she added.

The database highlights the lack of strategic memorialisation efforts by providing drone videos and photographs of the current condition of the locations, and in some cases 3D models of the sites, many of which are neglected an unmarked, with no signs indicating that they were wartime crime scenes.

The database is designed for use by journalists, researchers, students, civil society organisations and, most importantly, for the families of war victims with limited resources to access court records, archives and information related to clandestine graves in the region.

At the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021, BIRN visited and documented more than 60 mass grave locations.

Most of the gravesites in the database are in unmarked fields, illegal garbage pits, next to public roads or on the property of private companies. In some cases, the sites were hidden as new housing was built around them.

Initial research for the launch of the database was based on the 42 largest mass graves in the former Yugoslavia that yielded more than 100 bodies. In the second phase of research, BIRN will map graves that contained between 50 and 100 bodies, while the third phase will map the remaining sites.

The biggest mass grave in the region was in Serbia, at a police training centre in the Belgrade neighbourhood of Batajnica, where 744 bodies of Kosovo Albanians were found.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the biggest gravesites were discovered around the towns of Zvornik, Srebrenica and Prijedor, where the bodies of Bosniak civilians were buried. One of the biggest gravesites in Croatia was discovered near Ovcara farm, near the town of Vukovar, where 200 bodies were found.

More than 130,000 people lost their lives as a consequence of the wars in the former Yugoslavia and 40,000 went missing. So far remains of around 28,000 people have been found in more than 1,500 clandestine gravesites, while in Bosnia and Herzegovina alone, around 1,000 gravesites have been uncovered.

As sources for the database, BIRN used forensic reports from the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, ICTY, court testimony statements and archive satellite footage, as well as documents, research papers, testimonies and news archive footage from different sources.

BIRN also cross-referenced data from the ICTY, the Missing Persons Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the International Commission on Missing Persons, the International Committee of the Red Cross and other organisations that were involved in the process of exhuming and identifying the victims.

The database provides a wide-ranging insight into the killings and subsequent cover-up operations – many of which remain unpunished, more than two decades later.

Call for Applications: Basic Journalism Training for High School Students

As part of the EU-supported “Solidifying the Resilience of Kosovo’s Current and Future Journalists” project, BIRN Kosovo is seeking students from Kosovo’s public high schools interested in undergoing training in media production, media literacy and tackling fake news.

There is currently a promising generation of high school students in Kosovo who have the talent, creative ideas and willingness to engage in investigative journalism, but the media lacks a specific platform to provide these students the chance to express their skills through writing and community reporting.

In order to capitalize on the interest in journalism among young people, and in an attempt to plug the gap in the education system, BIRN Kosovo will organize ten (10) training sessions for 200 high school students in a program that aims to nurture young talent by mentoring students in the production of videos, photos and articles in order to achieve the main goal of the activity which is to lay the path for increased independence, transparency, accountability and civic engagement.

The training sessions will introduce the students to journalism, including topics like journalistic language and concepts, reporting standards, photography tips, production materials for video content, video editing, investigative journalism, ethics and author’s rights.

At the end of each training session, youngsters from high schools across Kosovo will pitch their journalistic ideas, which the BIRN team will collect and thoroughly analyse before selecting a minimum of 60 video and article ideas that will be published on the online platform KallxoRinia. The production process for all of these articles will be overseen by a team of BIRN Kosovo editors.

Who can apply?

Students attending Social Studies departments at Kosovo’s public high schools of the regions such as: Prishtina, Mitrovica, Prizren, Gjilan, Gorazdveac within the Peja region, Gjakova, Ferizaj, Drenas, Malisheva and Rahovec.

The number of participants is limited in each training session due to restrictions preventing the spread of COVID-19. A maximum 20 participants per training will be selected.

BIRN Kosova është në kërkim të nxënësve nga shkollat publike të Kosovës të interesuar për të qenë pjesë e trajnimit për prodhim medial dhe shkrim-lexim mediatik si dhe trajtimin e lajmeve të rreme si pjesë e projektit “Solidifikimi i Qëndrueshmërisë së Gazetarëve të Tanishëm dhe të Ardhshëm të Kosovës“, i cili mbështetet nga BE.

Aktualisht ekziston një gjeneratë premtuese e nxënësve të shkollave të mesme në Kosovë që kanë talent, ide krijuese dhe gatishmëri për t’u angazhuar në gazetari hulumtuese, mirëpo media nuk ka një platformë specifike për t’u siguruar këtyre studentëve mundësinë për të shprehur aftësitë e tyre përmes shkrimit dhe raportimit lokal.

Me qëllim që të përfitojnë nga interesimi i të rinjve në gazetari, dhe në një përpjekje për të plotësuar boshllëkun në sistemin arsimor, BIRN Kosova do të organizojë dhjetë (10) seanca trajnimi për 200 nxënës të shkollave të mesme në një program që synon të shtojë talentin e të rinjve duke mentoruar studentët në prodhimin e videove, fotove dhe artikujve në mënyrë që të arrihet qëllimi kryesor i aktivitetit që është vë bazat për rritjen e pavarësisë, transparencës, llogaridhënies dhe angazhimit qytetar.

Kao deo projekta koji podržava EU „Učvršćivanje pozicija sadašnjih i budućih novinara na Kosovu“, BIRN Kosovo poziva učenike kosovskih javnih srednjih škola zainteresovanih za obuku iz medijske produkcije, medijske pismenosti i borbe protiv lažnih vesti.

Trenutno na Kosovu postoji perspektivna generacija srednjoškolaca koji imaju talenat, kreativne ideje i volju da se bave istraživačkim novinarstvom, ali medijima nedostaje posebna platforma koja bi ovim učenicima pružila priliku da iskažu svoje veštine pisanjem i izveštavanjem iz zajednice.

Kako bi iskoristio interesovanje za novinarstvo među mladima i u pokušaju da prevaziđe jaz u obrazovnom sistemu, BIRN Kosovo će organizovati deset (10) treninga za 200 srednjoškolaca u programu koji ima za cilj negovanje mladih talenata kroz mentorisanje učenika u video produkciji, fotografiji i člancima kako bi se postigao glavni cilj aktivnosti, a to je otvaranje puta za veću nezavisnost, transparentnost, odgovornost i građanski angažman.

Treninzi će učenike upoznati sa novinarstvom, uključujući teme poput novinarskog jezika i koncepata, standarda izveštavanja, saveta za fotografiju, produkciju materijala za video sadržaje, video montažu, istraživačko novinarstvo, etiku i autorska prava.

Na kraju svakog treninga, mladi iz srednjih škola širom Kosova će predstaviti svoje novinarske ideje koje će BIRN-ova ekipa prikupiti i detaljno analizirati pre nego što odabere najmanje 60 ideja za video i članke koji će biti objavljeni na on-line platformi KallxoRinia. Proces produkcije svih ovih članaka će nadgledati tim urednika BIRN Kosovo.

BIRN and IPI Launch Call for Applications for the Third Two-Day Training Course on Fact-Checking and Tackling Disinformation

BIRN and the International Press Institute (IPI) have opened the Call for Applications for the third two-day training course on fact-checking and tackling disinformation as part of the EU funded project titled “Solidifying the Resilience of Kosovo’s Current and Future Journalists” .

The first edition held on December 2020 gathered a total of 36 participants were part of the training, including 24 journalists and six students of journalism, 20 of whom were women. The trainings were led by Stephane M. Grueso from Maldita.es and five trainers of Teyit including Kansu Ekin Tanca, Gülin Çavuş, Öyküm Hüma Keskin and Emre İlkan Saklıca.

While the second training held on March 2021 gathered a total of 34 participants, 27 of whom were women. The trainers of the two-day training included Carina Van Wyk, Allwell Okpi, and Keegan Leech from Africa Check, the first independent fact-checking organization in Africa. While the second day was led by Eoghan Sweeney, an open-source investigation specialist and trainer who over the past decade has helped to establish and develop digital verification and fact-checking operations at media organizations across the globe.

IPI will invite different experienced media professionals to administer the training course and share their knowledge and experience with Kosovo journalists, as well as students of journalism and social sciences.

The first day of training will be held by Claus Hesseling, a German journalist, author, trainer and lecturer who will cover the basics of fact-checking and verification, while the second day of the training will include trainers such as: Miroslava Sirotnikova who contributed to international media outlets, Kostas Zafeiropoulos, a co-founder of the non-profit Mediterranean Institute for Investigative Reporting (MIIR) and an investigative journalist for one of Greece’s biggest daily newspapers “Efimerida ton Sintakton”, Darren Loucaides a UK based journalist focused on disinformation, Edgaras Savickas an investigative journalist, and Sarah Hurtes whose work has appeared in Harper’s Bazaar, Vice and Thomson Reuters.

As the only media organization in Kosovo certified by the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), BIRN has again teamed up with the IPI, an EU-based global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists, in order to help improve standards in Kosovo journalism.

Final year journalism and social sciences students, recent graduates, and young and professional journalists from Kosovo may apply for the course.

Candidates from all parts of the country are encouraged to apply. However, the number of participants is limited and we will give priority to younger journalists with less experience in the described field.

BIRN dhe Instituti Ndërkombëtar i Medias (IPI) kanë hapur Thirrjen për Aplikime për kursin e tretë dy-ditor të trajnimit mbi kontrollimin e fakteve dhe trajtimin e dezinformimit si pjesë e projektit të financuar nga BE me titull “Solidifikimi i Qëndrueshmërisë së Gazetarëve të Tanishëm dhe të Ardhshëm të Kosovës“,

Edicioni i parë i mbajtur në dhjetorin e  vitit 2020 mblodhi një total prej 36 pjesëmarrësish që ishin pjesë e trajnimit, duke përfshirë 24 gazetarë dhe gjashtë studentë të gazetarisë, 20 prej të cilëve ishin gra. Trajnimet u udhëhoqen nga Stephane M. Grueso nga Maldita.es dhe pesë trajnerë të Teyit përfshirë Kansu Ekin Tanca, Gülin Çavuş, Öyküm Hüma Keskin dhe Emre İlkan Saklıca.

BIRN i Međunarodni institut za štampu (IPI) su otvorili poziv za prijavljivanje za treći dvodnevni kurs obuke o proveri činjenica i borbi protiv dezinformacija u okviru projekta koji finansira EU pod nazivom „Učvršćivanje pozicija sadašnjih i budućih novinara na Kosovu“ .

Prvo izdanje je održano u decembru 2020. godine i okupilo je ukupno 36 učesnika koji su bili deo obuke, uključujući 24 novinara i šest studenata novinarstva, od kojih su 20 bile žene. Obuku su vodili Stephane M. Grueso iz Maldita.es i pet trenera Teyit , uključujući Kansu Ekin Tanca, Gülin Çavuş, Öyküm Hüma Keskin i Emre İlkan Saklıca.
