Macedonian Intelligence Data Controversy
31 08 2007 Skopje_ Macedonian officials on Friday denied a report in the country’s largest newspaper that an employee in the country’s counter-intelligence agency stole the complete intelligence file detailing undercover agents, plans and current operations.
In its report Friday, the daily newspaper Dnevnik quoted unnamed Interior Ministry sources as saying in that the employee copied the data onto compact discs, went to neighbouring Bulgaria, and delivered the secrets to Bulgarian secret services.
Government spokesman Ivica Bocevski said at a press conference Friday that the Dnevnik story was “a flagrant fabrication” that “does not correspond to the truth.” Police spokesman Ivo Kotevski told Balkan Insight that such theft has not been reported.
The sources cited by the newspaper said the stolen data is enough to uncover the entire Macedonian intelligence network.
