Life in Kosovo Debates the Management of Courts in Kosovo

This Thursday, Life in Kosovo will broadcast a debate on the management of courts in Kosovo in light of a new manual which dictates how they should be run.

What are the challenges and what is new in the court manual? When will the manual come into force? Are there any budgetary implications? Are the changes in the manual in harmony with the new draft law on courts which will enter into force in 2011?

In order to discuss these issues, and others related to the management of courts, the following guests will join Fation Ademi in the studio:

Enver Peci, head of the Judicial Council of Kosovo,
Murat Pacarada, administrator at the economic court in Prishtina,

Tonight, Life in Kosovo will broadcast a debate on the privatisation of Post and Telecommunications of Kosovo.

Should PTK be privatised? Why did the opposition boycott the privatisation strategy in parliament? How much is PTK worth? What will Kosovo benefit from this privatisation? Has the privatisation process been transparent until now?

 

How will PTK’s assets be divided? Why is 75 per cent of these assets been sold? What will happen to PTK employees? How will the recent investigations into PTK impact on potential investors?

Life in Kosovo Debates the Issue of Headscarves in Public Schools

This Thursday, Life in Kosovo discusses the issue of wearing headscarves in public institutions.

 

Who is worried by the use of headscarves? What are the administrative orders regarding headscarves based on? Does anyone encourage women to wear the veil? Does the ban on headscarves in public schools violate human rights?

Life in Kosovo will hold a live discussion on the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on Kosovo’s independence.

This Thursday on Life in Kosovo you will follow the debate on the importance of regional cooperation, politically and economically.

The debate will cover different aspects of regional cooperation as free movement, free circulation of goods and the CEFTA free trade agreement.

What are the challenges and problems Kosovo is facing regarding regional cooperation? What more could Kosovo have done regarding regional cooperation and what hasn’t it done? Why does UNMIK still represent Kosovo in regional meetings?

This Thursday, Life in Kosovo will broadcast two debates, a debate regarding the activities undertaken by the Assembly of Kosovo in the fight against corruption, and another debate on the management of the University Clinical Centre of Kosovo.

What has the Assembly of Kosovo done in the fight against corruption? How powerful are the current laws to fight corruption? Where does the problem lie according to civil society? Who didn’t state their assets? Who will verify those declarations? Why have the declarations of assets for 2008 not been published?

Life in Kosovo debates problems in the judicial system

The topic of the debate on Life in Kosovo this Thursday will be the problems and restructuring of the judicial system.

BIRN has monitored 1248 trials in 18 courts in the past year. The findings of the systematic monitoring of the courts have been published in the yearly report, and they will be the main issues that will be discussed on the programme.

What are the main findings of the BIRN monitors who have systematically monitored 1248 trials in 18 courts of the country? How difficult does the absence of key legal staff in trials make coming to a judgment? What are the kinds of sentences that are issued by the courts of Kosovo?

 

What are the consequences in delaying the start of the trials? How do the defence lawyers of the parties respect the official judgment? How will the system of calling parties for trial be regulated? How does the absence of a translator in the court room make the judgment difficult?

To discuss these findings and the recommendations of the BIRN report on Kosovo’s judicial system, the discussion panel is made of representatives of the judicial, prosecution, ministry of justice and Kosovo Judicial Council.
