Valerie Hopkins is an American journalist who has worked extensively throughout the Balkans.

Valerie holds a B.A. in International Relations from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, and an M.A. in political journalism from Columbia University in New York, NY. Her M.A. thesis, about female war criminals from the Bosnian war, wasthe runner up for best thesis of the year.

After graduating from Columbia, Valerie won an Overseas Press Club fellowship which sent her to Belgrade, Serbia, to work for ThomsonReuters. Her work has appeared in Foreign Policy, the Guardian, OpenDemocracy. She formerly served as the daily web editor for the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project, based in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Investigations she worked on there have been named finalists for the Daniel Pearl Investigative Reporting Award and a Global Shining Light Award.

Prior to working in journalism, Valerie worked in the Press and Public Information Unit of theOrganization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina and for a boutique election law firm in Washington, DC.

At BIRN, Valerie edits the BIG DEAL website, which covers everything related to the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue and the implementation of the agreements reached between the two countries.
