Jelena Cosic is the Belgrade-based Project Coordinator for BIRN’s Investigative Reporting Initiative Programme, under which falls the investigative project “A Paper Trail for Better Governance” and BIRN’s Summer School of Investigative Reporting.

Together with an Investigative Editor she builds investigative teams throughout the Balkans and internationally, which also working on investigations that cover crime and corruption. She assists in establishing cooperation and partnerships with other media outlets (The Guardian, Al Jazeera UK, BBC, DATUM from Austria, OCCRP).

Jelena helps improve technology strategies for BIRN on tech matters as well as journalism education. Jelena was a Digital Communication Network exchange program fellow, which was sponsored by the US Department of State.

Prior to joining BIRN, Jelena was a reporter for Radio and Television B92 in Belgrade.

She has received several investigative awards, including the Making a Killing series, which delved into the illicit flow of weapons from the Balkans to the Middle East, which was a runner-up in the prestigious Global Shining Light award and joint first-place in Serbia’s Excellence in Investigative Journalism award in 2017 and third prize in the European Union’s investigative journalism awards for Serbia in 2016. 

Jelena studied at the journalism and communications department of the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Belgrade.

She speaks Serbian and English and knows the basics of Russian and Spanish.
