From February 24 to 28, BIRN Serbia and Montenegro will conduct a primary
level journalism training course for a wide range of Montenegrin reporters.
Up to ten participants are expected to join the course, which will be
held in Podgorica's PR Centre. Composed of reporters from different ethnic
and journalistic backgrounds, the group will form the core of a Balkan
Investigative Reporting Network team in Montenegro.
Well-known British journalist Tim Judah will open the course. The author
of "The Serbs: History, Myth and the Destruction of Yugoslavia"
and "Kosovo: War and Revenge," Judah will share his extensive
Balkans experience with the Montenegrin journalists, with a focus on reporting
from war zones as a freelance journalist.
The training will be led by BIRN's development and editorial director
Gordana Igric and Balkan editor and trainer Marcus Tanner, together with
BIRN Serbia director Dragana Nikolic-Solomon.
Training will focus on basic international standards such as feature writing
and news analysis, structure, sourcing and international libel. After
the course, the BIRN Montenegrin team will begin writing articles under
the close supervision and mentoring of BIRN staff.
Their articles will be featured in a special issue of Balkan Insight
focused on Montenegro.
BBC Belgrade correspondent Matt Prodger and Gertraud Illmeier of the
Austrian daily Die Presse will be guest lecturers.
The workshop is part of the three-year-long Minority and Training Project,
which was launched in 2005 with the support of the British embassy in
Belgrade through the UK government's Global Opportunities Fund.
