Mitrovica North, April 13-15 2006

journalists from around Kosovo from 13 to 15 April.
BIRN SaM conducted a three-day workshop for nine Serb and Bosniak
journalists from around Kosovo from 13 to 15 April.
Training focused on international standards in reporting, BIRN style
and structure for news analyses and features, libel law and diversity
reporting. The journalists and trainers also discussed differences in
local and international journalism, methods of achieving balance in
their coverage and the most common mistakes journalists make and how to
avoid them.
Trainees viewed BIRN documentary's "Does Anyone Have a Plan" and debated
issues raised by the film, with a focus on how to practice balanced
reporting in multiethnic areas such as Kosovo.
The second part of the course was dedicated to on-the-job training.
Journalists worked with trainers to identify interesting and relevant
topics, discussed how to approach the stories and, finally, nine
articles were commissioned for a special package dedicated to Kosovo's
minority issues.
The trainees will have an opportunity to become members of BIRN regional
network.
The trainees worked with Dragana Nikolic Solomon, BIRN SaM director,
Jeta Xhara, BIRN Kosovo director, Ana Petruseva, BIRN Macedonia Director
and Gordana Igric, BIRN editor in chief.
The next training session for Kosovo minority journalists will be held
in Belgrade in July.
Sponsored by the British Embassy in Belgrade, the Northern Mitrovica
training is part of a three-year-long minority journalism training and
reporting project. For more info please contact Dragana Nikolic Solomon, BIRN SaM. (dragana@birn.eu.com.)
