BIRN’s First Seminar in East Serbia
12 06 2007 The BIRN Serbia team
on June 9-10 held an initial training course for journalists in eastern Serbia
as part of plans to expand the BIRN reporting network.
The seminar took
place in Zajecar and gathered five journalists from
around the region, who work for local and national media outlets.
Over two days, the participants from Zajecar, Bor and Majdanpek, were
introduced to international standards of reporting, news analyses and
feature writing. In addition, Aleksandar Vasovic, BIRN Serbia Trainer,
held group session where developing ideas for analyses and article
structure were discussed.
Additionally, two journalists from Belgrade and Bujanovac were present at
the session, as they will be working together with colleagues from East
Serbia on articles dealing with nationwide issues.
The training will be followed by a special issue of Balkan Insight devoted
to the socio-political situation in East Serbia,
examining unsuccessful
privatisations, ecological problems, relations with neighbouring countries after their accession to the EU and the plight of minority groups.
This training was sponsored by the British embassy in Belgrade as a part
of a three-year journalism training project. It provided journalists wit’
an invaluable opportunity to familiarise themselves with BIRN working
practices and become permanent members of its network.
