Kick-off Seminar Closed, Research Follows
14 05 2009 The first seminar for the ten journalists selected to participate in 2009 Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence ended on April 28th, and will be followed by four months of the fellows’ international research.
Over the five working days in Vienna, the fellows took part in group and individual sessions, where they discussed the reporting they are to undertake as part of the programme, as well as the wider annual topic and common issues to the journalistic profession.
Training and editorial sessions helped the journalists to sharpen their approach to research and writing, while they were additionally given the opportunity to broaden their understanding of ‘identity’ through presentations of artists, experts and politicians such as Bojana Pejic, curator of the regional exhibition “Gender Check”, Erhard Busek, the Czech president’s special adviser for EU enlargement and Vladimir Gligorov from The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies.
The fellows had a chance to exchange professional experiences and information with Austrian colleagues, journalists and editors from Der Standard newspaper, Der Standard online and Austrian Press Agentur.
Each fellow will devise a local, regional and European research agenda before embarking on a summer spent chasing stories, sources and statistics.
In this web site you will have a chance to follow their experiences and impressions through fellows’ updates and to check the fellowship gallery for 2009.
In-depth articles, produced as a result of the research and reporting programme, will be available on line and published in a book in November 2009.
The Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence is an initiative of the Robert Bosch Stiftung and the ERSTE Foundation, in cooperation with the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network.
