Albena was IWPR Country Director for Bulgaria since the beginning of
2005, and with the localsation of the Institute's Balkan project, she
in April established the Balkan Investigative Reporting Network, BIRN,
in Bulgaria as a part of the wider regional network.
She has been working as journalist since 1991, writing for various Bulgarian
media, notably for the Sofia based print-editions Standard, 24 chasa,
Dnevnik, Tema and others. In 2004 she also worked as a correspondent for
Radio Liberty.
For two years, from 2001 to 2003, she was in diplomatic service at the
Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she was a head of information
policy and the public relations department.
She graduated Slavonic philology and international relations at Sofia
University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and specialized EU Policy
at the London School of Economics.
At the beginning of 2010 BIRN network published Digging Deeper - A Guide for Investigative Journalists in the Balkans, written in cooperation with Sheila Coronel, Director of the Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism and professor of professional practice at Columbia University, New York.
