Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence Editor in Chief
Each year the programme provides financial and professional support for ten journalists, chosen in open competition, to research and write a 2,500 word magazine-style article focusing on a common topic.
We are currently looking for an experienced editor for the programme, to train and mentor the participants, edit both their final reports and their regular progress reports and updates for the fellowship web site - http://fellowship.birn.eu.com - and ensure that the programme maintains and develops its high profile amongst the media community and the wider public in the Balkans and beyond. In addition, the editor will be charged with developing a growing and active alumni network.
The programme aims to address the continued need in the region to foster quality reporting, encourage regional networking amongst journalists and to advance in-depth coverage on complex issues that are central to the region and the European Union.
The ideal candidate will:
- Be based in the Balkans, and able to travel widely throughout the region
- Be a native English speaker with a significant track record in print media and experience in editing long magazine-style articles
- Have a sound knowledge and understanding of the Balkans
- Have experience in journalism training programmes
- Be an effective administrator and manager
- Have exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate cross-culturally
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Participation in the selection process
- Preparation of the training modules for introductory seminars and delivery of training
- Regular communication, mentoring, guidance of participants during the research phase of the programme
- Editing and fact checking of the fellows’ articles
- Editing additional material for the Fellowship website and developing and executing a strategy for the promotion of the website
- Commissioning and editing individual stories and regional reporting projects from alumni fellows
- Coordinating teams of regional journalists working on regional projects
- Liaising with BIRN local editors throughout the region
- Promotion of the programme in the region and across the EU, including participation in promotional events and campaigns, preparation of promotional material and arranging syndication of fellows' articles in cooperation with BIRN staff
- Filing narrative reports and documentation for BIRN and our project partners covering the implementation of each stage of the programme
