First Roma Journalist Workshop Organized in Belgrade
04 10 2007 The BIRN Serbia team organized an initial training session
for Roma journalists from all over Serbia. The training was held from
September 27-29, as part of BIRN’s ongoing Minority Training and Reporting
Project.
The seminar took place in the Media Centre in Belgrade, and gathered eight journalists from Novi Sad, Obrenovac, Nis
and Prokuplje, who work for their local media outlets.
The training session was delivered by Aleksandar Vasovic,
BIRN Serbia editor, and Orhan Galjus, a prominent Roma journalist and activist
from Amsterdam.
Over two days, Vasovic introduced international standards of
reporting, news analyses and feature writing to the journalists. Galjus then
held two sessions where he gave an overview about the history of Roma media and
the language used in journalism. He
discussed different topics and sources concerning Roma and mainstream issues.
Both Vasovic and Galjus participated in a session devoted to
outlining stories that will be published in November in a special edition of
Balkan Insight dedicated to key political, economic and social issues of
importance to the Roma community in Serbia.
The trainees’ reports will be published in the English,
Serbian and Roma languages.
This training session was sponsored by the British embassy
in Belgrade and the OSCE mission in Serbia as a
part of a three-year journalism training project.
