The fifth ‘You Make the Budget’ event, organised by BIRN Serbia and Pro Concept, was held yesterday in Republic Square in Belgrade to coincide with the celebrations for International Youth Day organised by the Belgrade Youth Office
At the event people were asked to demonstrate their spending priorities for the 2010 national budget of 656 billion dinars, by placing ‘money’ in 25 boxes, each representing one of the Serbian Government ministries. Altogether, 171 young persons participated at the action.

“We hope that these events will encourage young people to take matters in their own hands and demand more accountability from their government,” said Slobodan Georgijev, from BIRN.
The young people assigned the biggest share of the money to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, some 10.64 per cent of the total budget, followed by the Ministry of Health (9.92 per cent), the Ministry of Education (9.05 per cent), the Ministry of Culture (8.08 per cent) and the Ministry of Science and Technology (7.78 per cent).
At the bottom of their priority list were the Ministry for the National Investment Plan (1.72 per cent), the Ministry of the Diaspora (1.56 per cent), the Ministry of Trade and Services (1.53 per cent), the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Government (1.22 per cent), and the Ministry without Portfolio (0.28 per cent).
At the celebrations of International Youth day - "Your step towards Europe” - 240 free inter-rail tickets were presented to young people who haven’t yet had the opportunity to travel outside of Serbia. The event was attended by a number of senior officials including the Minister of Youth and Sport, Snezana Samardzic – Markovic, and the UN Resident Co-ordinator in Serbia William Infante.
BIRN and Pro Concept will be holding similar events across the country in the coming months.
