BIRN Street Event
25 02 2010 BIRN Serbia is organizing a street event which will be held as part of the „Skockajte Budzet“ campaign in front of the Terazije fountain at 12 pm on February 27th.
The event aims to include citizens in the process of planning the Serbian budget by giving those who are interested a chance to show which sectors they consider as priorities in planning public expenditures.
The event in downtown Belgrade will enable citizens to construct the budget of 656 billion dinars, which is the total ammount of the state budget for 2010. The procedure will be done by placing money in 25 boxes (symbolizing the number of ministries) and thus showing how they would distribute the money from the state coffer.
BIRN and its partner organization Pro Concept, together with experts and representatives from the government and media want to show that people should have a voice in the process of planning the state budget and that there is room for a wider debate about the direction in which Serbia should develop.
Upon finalization of the street event, the results will be published on the website www.skockajtebudzet.rs
“Skockajte budzet” campaign is part of the larger project “Eye on Public Finances” which was launched in late 2009 by BIRN Serbia and Pro Concept. The aim of the programme is to broaden the understanding and discussion on budget issues among MPs, NA staff, media representatives and CSO’s, as well as to increase the public demand for transparency and accountability.
