In addition, the most influential newspaper from South Serbia, Vranjske weekly, went through a series of in house trainings. With a number of articles dealing with the interethnic issues in Southern Serbia raised by almost 60% in comparison to the same period in 2008, Vranjske weekly is established as a reliable and objective source of information for all communities and stakeholders. Vukasin Obradovic, editor of Vranjske weekly, received the OSCE annual award for a special contribution to development of interethnic tolerance and objective reporting during 2009.
Four of the trainees were awarded, including the Award for the best investigative journalism story published in 2009 http://birn.eu.com/en/1/190/18702

Trainees’ analytical articles and interviews with local stakeholders were republished by some of the most influential local and national media and together with successfully organized panels and television discussions, they lead to greater exposure of South Serbia at national level, contributing to increased understanding of democratic and integrative processes that facilitate conflict prevention. For example, BIRN produced together with public broadcaster RTS half an hour documentary on the economic situation in South Serbia, and for the first time the public had a chance to hear about problems of prominent Albanian businessman from South Serbia.
In 2010, BIRN continues to implement programs in South Serbia, mainly focusing on web journalism training and organising public debates.
Believing that media needs to play a pivotal role in creating dispassionate discourse in multiethnic areas, Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) has designed a programme that combines three components: training of local journalists, publishing of high quality articles and holding panel discussions, leading to profound understanding of inter-ethnic and political concerns, their seeds and consequences.
